This book is about the wonderful, the idiosyncratic, buildings within and some outside the South Downs National Park. It is about their history, their location and the changes local and national that have affected them and their communities. Each has a page and two photos for the churches, less photos for the chapels. 

There are madcap stories of the vicars/rectors/curates in the mid-nineteenth century thanks to insights from the tithe maps. There's saintliness, greed, absence, a highwayman and a small number of murders. There's Jane Austen (and her second cousin also called Jane Austen), Rev. Gilbert White, 'Soapy' Sam Wilberforce, Cardinal Manning before his move to Roman Catholicism. Anthony Trollope, he used to live near one and his aunt near another while he wrote about the scandal of a third. 

And there's rampaging that has left its own mark.
