Lindfield, the original Saxon settlement was ‘open land with lime trees’ although it has gone through subtle variations in spelling the meaning has stayed the same. Lindfield has also retained its connection with lime trees, with which the High Street is regailed, if highly pollarded to keep the size manageable in a small street. They look stunning in the summer months, but the knobbly bits show rather in the leafless months of winter and early spring.
