The ancient fishing village of Capernaum lies on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in the Holy Land. With a mixed history of being inhabited and abandoned for centuries it is now an archaeological site that includes a number of intriguing and famous features and sites. In this photograph there are the ‘remains’ and partial restorations of a synagogue from the fourth century on the top of an earlier one, possibly from the first century AD/CE, and some buildings from the Roman period town.
