Lichens come in all sorts of different forms and grow in different places. Arguably the most obvious is called Lobaria pulmonaria, which is named for its similarity to the human lung and turns out to be highly sensitive to air pollution. This lichen grows richly in the humid areas of western Britain, particularly in Scotland, but this photograph was taken in the surprising natural beauty and richness of the Anaga Ridge on the island of Tenerife. There is a great deal more to the Canary Islands than the travel brochures show.
