Obviously with a book written heavily dealing with tunnels and tunnelling, the dramatic Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 would be of interest to us. Add to that the fact that some of Amanda’s landscape planning work was part of the teamwork that led eventually to this tunnel’s construction to avoid the destruction of the Devil’s Punchbowl and it really did have to be part of our offerings.
Opened in 2011, this tunnel has allowed the previous line of the A3 above the Devil’s Punchbowl to be returned to open ground and the National Trust now own and manage the café that was once a transport ‘caff’.
