Samarkand: Samarkand is full of Islamic architectural treasures, which consist of lapis lazuli domes. Simon visited Samarkand at the beginning of tour leading in the Pamir Mountains of Uzbekistan in 1989. For so much time, Samarkand is a forbidden city and to visit it was a great privilege. Many of the people living in the city, especially the men, wore traditional dress. Most of the Islamic buildings were either mausoleums of great historic leaders or madrasahs, such as Registan Square.
