‘Our next port of call was to be high mountains in the Taurus Mountains of Central Turkey....we climbed inland through the Cilician Gates. These are an amazingly narrow pass into the higher mountains beyond.
We spent our first night...in a remarkably run down hotel in the village of Pozanti. Before settling in, some of us went for a walk. We rapidly collected a large following of children and felt like the Pied Piper of Hamlyn. In a piece of woodland, I was delighted to find a very attractive, pink-flowered orchid which was Cephelanthera kurdica. Our hotel was quite large, but had suffered from savage vandalism. Although we appeared to be the only guests, no room could be found for us that had a set of unbroken washbasin, loo and bath. Most had masonry on the floor, and windows were often cracked and broken. Somehow we managed to select the least damaged rooms and all passed a relatively satisfactory night.’ [Extract from Is No Problem by Simon Davey]
