Written with 7-11 year-olds in mind, it is really suitable for all ages, including grown-ups.

I've recently read a book... a small unique book which was waiting for me when I got back from New York. It's a children's book written and published by my friend Amanda Davey. I read it from beginning to end in one sitting. This is what I said to her afterwards. "Freckles and Friends" is a wonderful, magical and informative book. It deserves a wider audience".

Freckles and Friends is a compendium of stories about the wildlife that lives in the garden of Amanda and her husband Simon. Each chapter focuses on a different animal and tells about the lives they lead in the garden. There is Atlas the squirrel (and the daffodils), Jacko, Porgie and Bess who are birds.... and a lovely chapter entitled "The bumblebee rap" among others.

The book opens with the enticing words "In the large oak tree at the bottom of the garden there is often a rustle of leaves and a crack of twigs followed by a chacking noise. This is where the squirrels run......"

This is a children's book, but I defy any adult with a smidgen of an interest in the natural world not to enjoy it and to learn a huge amount at the same time.
