Marine Iguanas are the only lizards in the world that spend time in and feed in the sea. They are confined to the Galapagos Islands where seas are very cold, in spite of them being either on, or close to the Equator. Being reptiles, they are cold blooded, and in order to spend time in the sea feeding, they have to spend an hour or two in the sun to warm up their blood. They are total vegetarians, feeding on seaweeds which they scrape off the rocks with their beak like jaws. There are many forms of Marine Iguana, and each island usually has its own subspecies.
