It can often seem as though the idea of ‘The Wilderness’ is something for the mind more than the body. The battleground between yearning and temptation. But it is a real place just east of Jerusalem, more often named the Judaean Desert and stretches from the Dead Sea north towards the upper reaches of the River Jordan. It reaches east to the hilltop fort of Masada and includes the finding grounds for the Dead Sea Scrolls near to Qumran.
It looks arid, crossed by multiple dry wadis, but there is wildlife lurking in amongst the stones and rubble, including a few tough plants and mammals such as Ibex, Gazelle and Hyrax, with birds (both resident and migrant visitors) as well as Egyptian and Griffon Vultures
