In the historically and politically complex area of the Holy Land the layers of history intertwine with tradition and centuries of rumour and conjecture. The traditional location of the birthplace of Jesus is definitely one of the most complex sites to visit.
This area has been a World Heritage Site since 2012 and a church has been above the cave believed to have been the location since at least 339AD/CE when Constantine's mother Helena went on a church building spree across the many biblical sites following her son's conversion. The church we visit now is a mixture of ecclesiastical buildings and monasteries overseen by the Greek Orthodox Church, the Custody of the Holy Land and the Armenian Church among others including UNESCO who had the site on the heritage sites at risk list until 2019 when the roof was in dire need of repairs.
